His Aikido training began in Tokyo, Japan in 1971. That summer, he had
some idle time to fill while visiting his parent, and there was an Aikido
dojo a few train stops away. Any martial art would have been fine. He just
wanted a place for physical exercise and to satisfy his boyhood curiosity
about martial arts. A few years later, he resumed his beginner training
in New York Aikikai, NY. Gradually he shifted the ratio of practice hours
to the Bond Street Dojo in the NoHo District of New York City. Terry Dobson
and Ken Nisson had started this dojo in the early Seventies; and Paul Kang
gradually found himself as an integral part of the second generation members
ever since.
During the Seventies, he scratched the surface of several other martial
arts, having fun being a weekend warrior: Karate, Iaido and Kendo. His senior
Aikidokas said this would be good for Aikido training. Then in 1976, Saotome
Shihan walked into the Bond Street Dojo soon after he arrived at this country
to see Terry Dobson, who was Saotome Shihan s brother uchi-deshi during
O-Sensei days. This was a turning point for Paul Kang also. Witnessing Saotome
Shihans Aikido made him realize there was another level of Aikido that
he had not known and how shallow his skill level had been. He stopped all
other martial art training to concentrate on Aikido since then. Paul Kang
